MEG TURNER

Long before she experienced gardens through the eyes of a designer, Meg was taught to respect the land and a garden’s place in the ecosystem by her grandmother, who grew up on an Irish farm. While living in New Orleans and Charleston, Meg was moved by the beauty of the built and natural landscapes. She took advantage of her time in those historically and horticulturally rich cities by immersing herself in their gardens. After moving to Richmond, Meg studied landscape design at night, while practicing law by day, supplementing her formal training by learning from leading designers and artisans who generously shared their time and expertise. Travels to study renowned landscape architecture and garden designs shaped and refined Meg’s appreciation for the principles of design, the necessity of proper scale, proportion, and balance, and the paramount importance of quality materials, workmanship, and attention to detail.

Meg is the principal of M. Turner Landscapes, a landscape design firm founded in 2002, focused on creating outdoor spaces that reflect classic design principles. Meg believes the most successful landscapes are those in which the client, the landscape designer, the architect, and the contractors work together toward a singular vision and collaborate to bring it to life.

On her blog, The Well-Dressed Garden, Meg writes about design, horticulture, significant private and public gardens, and developments in urban greening initiatives.

Meg graduated from the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia School of Law. She studied landscape design at George Washington University and is involved with many public landscape initiatives. She lives and gardens in Richmond, Virginia.

M. TURNER LANDSCAPES

Meg Turner founded M. Turner Landscapes, a full-service landscape design firm, with a focus on creating gardens that reflect classic design principles. M. Turner Landscapes approaches each project with the goal of transforming clients’ properties into beautiful, functional, elegant and timeless landscapes.

Turner Landscapes collaborates with its clients to create outdoor spaces that:

  • Seamlessly integrate the property’s architecture and landscape, providing a strong framework and a progression of beautifully functional outdoor spaces
  • Respond aesthetically and ecologically to the site’s natural and built elements, understanding that subtraction is as essential as addition, to reveal the soul of the landscape
  • Feature hardscape elements made with exquisite natural materials and expert craftsmanship.
  • Feature a plant palette that provides four seasons of interest with a beautiful interplay of restrained color, form, and texture
  • Elevate the space with seating, urns, structures, and sculpture
  • Respect the ecosystem by implementing effective stormwater retention practices and using plants appropriate to the site.
